A Comparison of Anger Restrainment Methods between Theravada Monks and Mahayana Monks

Abstract

 

 

This research had 3 objectives, manely; 1) to study monks anger blocking in Theravada Buddhism, 2 ) to study monks anger blocking in Mahayana Buddhism  and 3) to compare monks anger blocking between Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism. This work was a documentary research appeared in                 Tipitaka scripture and Theravada scholars were Buddhadasa Bhikkhu and                                  Phra Brahmagunabhorn, Mahayana scholars were Dalai Lama and Thich Nhat Hant including to related research , researcher present research’s result in describe writing for relation of objective of research.

 

The results of this research were found that.

1) Anger : according to Buddhism means anger, dislike, rancor, hurt, feud, cruelty included anger action, malice and be furious, this is called Anger. Researcher have studied from Tipitaka scripture about anger in Vinaya pitaka Suttanta pitaka in Theravada sect and Mahayana Suttra Bhodhicaryavatara or life process of Bhodhisattva, which was found that anger and anger blocking where Buddha had given sermon in different category it related to other category by comparison definition or perform with other group Dhamma.

2) In Theravada sect, anger blocking of Buddhadasa Bhikkhu found that Buddhadasa Bhikkhu had took principle which Buddha taught to rearrange for using specially anger, he had took various principle to block anger, he had set group for anger blocking from beginning until strictly from toleration, wisdom, mindfulness, restraint, truth, making truth, charity, moral shame, own action, mindfulness of death, the unbounded state, These groups were called that the barn of anger blocking, didn’t leave main principle, just made clear to see, anger still had but didn’t act madly until put an end to reason of anger. The anger blocking of                                Phra Brahmagunabhorn  (P.A. Payutto) found that he spoke various anger blocking by guide to practice good will meditation, especially ten steps of anger blocking the first thing was giving, or portion out, it was anger blocking immediately, which could block fate had resent for long time to calm down, enemy became friend, generous was showed in action, when anger left, revenge fire became nectar of generous and impatience became cheerfulness and happiness.

Mahayana sect, the anger blocking of Dalai Lama found that we could improve to block anger, that was patience, friendliness, attentiveness, emotional patience came to hit our mind, it could block anger, especially mindfulness to know and the best way of anger blocking was patience and fostering generous to be own mind persist all time, being compassionate or think of other’s feeling, there could have generous in their mind. Thich Nhat Hant anger blocking found that the process of human’s action could leave anger’s side, Buddha had gave quality tools for blocking fire in own mind, that was mindfulness of breathing or breathing had mindfulness to know, walking up and down, anger acceptance, survey acknowledgement until examine another side to understand that they are unhappy and want some helping too.

 

3) Researcher had compared 4 sides of anger blocking between Theravada with Mahayana sect: 1) Meaning of anger, anger means unhappiness, it looks like  blaze burst into flame and burn ourselves, it made us sad after speaking or acting    2) types of anger, it had meaning to relate in type of action anger, speech anger and mind anger : when strong anger happened irrespective of trying to keep any action so good but our face would be ugly, action was not good, feeling was showed strong feeling, it was not friendly to any other 3) wicked thing of anger. It had same for wicked thing in generally: anger was negative temper made our mind to be suffering all time, if who had this temper in mind it had more suffering, these tempers made our idea was not clear, feel unhappy till undermining own relation. 4) Anger blocking was using principle and process of Buddha’s teaching to block anger, Buddha told that anger born from unpatience and be kind to block anger. it had mindfulness to control all action was four setting up of mindfulness for careful to stop anger will appear and when anger happened it didn’t spread to go on and on, must control mindfulness and be kindly together for life, it always make every day until to discipline anger to could reach worldly Dhamma and releases one from the world.

 Summary : The anger blocking of Theravada sect and Mahayana sect was most related from concept by meaning and explain base of principle appeared in Tipitaka, it may be different in detail and practice in their life, but it was not have main of important explain became lower, that was the goal of anger blocking of both sects, only one goal was for publicize Buddha’s teaching, who was lord Buddha of disciple to all Buddhist people around the world to understand principle for practice in their life, it depend on educational attention or choose the way to practice included merit making had collected of each other for common interest and completed life in worldly Dhamma and Dhamma which releases one from the world.
